It’s time we introduce you to a drinkable product that is super cheap, refreshing and is better for your health than any other drink out there, but spoiler alert – beer league isn’t named after it.
Modern marketing has nailed down the science of advertising their 100% fruit juices, performance enhancing special electrolyte drinks and bubbly sodas – but what they fail to let you know is that there can be well over 10 teaspoons of sugar or more in these drinks.
“Most of the juices I see aren’t actually healthy – it would be better to eat the actual fruit,” says Dr. Mike Evans.
However, there’s one drink that takes the throne. The reigning, defending, undisputed heavyweight drink that boasts no sugar or artificial sweeter. If you’re looking for something that is organic, local, pure or gluten free – this drink has all of those. So, what is this miracle drink, you ask?
Water.
The importance of hydration
“Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles.” – Harvard Health
On a molecular level, remaining well hydrated is important because fluids help carry nutrients to your cells in order to flush bacteria from your bladder, and ultimately prevent constipation.
Warning signs of dehydration include:
- Weakness
- Low blood pressure
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Urine that’s dark in color
How much water should you drink?
The science points to the genius of our bodies.
If you are thirsty, you need to drink more water – especially if your urine is not clear. That is your best indicator. However, it is traditionally recommended to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (the 8×8 rule).
It is important to note however, that while you want to drink a lot throughout the day to stave off dehydration, it’s wise to spread it out over the day. Your kidneys lose some ability to eliminate water as you age – and you don’t want to be “that guy” that has to rush to the bathroom in the middle of the game.
Start replacing some of your coloured drinks with plain old water. You are 70% water – so let’s keep it that way!
